Apply for a graduate student assistantship using the GSA Application.

You will receive an email confirmation from the Office of Graduate Admission once the application has been received. However, after your GSA application is received, all questions about the status and outcome of your application must be directed to the appropriate academic department.


Decisions on assistantships are the sole responsibility of the departments, and their decisions are final.  Any questions about your GSA application after you have submitted can only be addressed by the academic department, not the Office of Graduate Admission.

To be eligible for GSA contracts Teaching, Research, and Other the following conditions apply:  

  1. A minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 for Master’s or 3.2 for doctoral students is required.
  2. If the student’s home language is not English, evidence of proficiency for both written and spoken English must be provided, even if they are alumni of English institutions. See TOEFL requirements

Federal law requires that before any employee may start to work for the university, the documents indicated below must be completed and submitted to the Office of Human Resources. Permitting an individual to work prior to completion of these documents subjects the university to serious and costly penalties and fines from the Internal Revenue Service, Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Labor. See Policy 10.2

  1. Approved authorization to hire signed by the appropriate hiring official.
  2. Completed W-4 signed by the employee.
  3. Completed I-9 with original documents submitted as proof of identity and eligibility to work.
  4. All returning GSAs must confirm with the Office of Human Resources that work authorization is still valid.

Note: Students receiving TAs or RAs may be required to pay Federal income tax, Social Security tax, or both on tuition and/or wages depending on the circumstances. Consult your tax advisor or the University's Controller Office for more information.


The priority deadline for all assistantship applications is January 15 for the subsequent Fall term. Please note that applications received after the program-designated deadline will be considered, but late applicants may be at a disadvantage in terms of being admitted and/or receiving scholarships, fellowships and assistantships.

Graduate Student contracts must be received from the departments at least two weeks prior to the date of the first paycheck. Contracts received late may result in a delay of payment. All students must sign their TA or RA contracts and return them prior to starting work.
